Linux Tip - Line count and Word count - Command line


$ wc file1.txt
211  507 4398 
This line means that the file had 211 lines, 507words and 4398characters (bytes).


Count the number of lines in file1.txt
$ wc -l < file1.txt
211



Count the number of words in file2.txt
$ wc -w file2.txt
507 file2.txt
